Multiple locations across Berlin

With its 10-days partner program, STATE Festival collaborates with a variety of different institutions across Berlin which will host thematically related events. Experience Berlin's unique science and creative scene through the lens of the festival.

Highlights of this year’s partner program include:

Hybrid Lab (Technische Universität Berlin, Marchstr. 8, 10587 Berlin)

Emotions make themselves felt and understood in many different ways: as bodily behavioral patterns that have evolved over time in evolutionary terms. As mental states that can be triggered by physiological reactions in the body. As a loop of unconscious processes and reflexive evaluations. Emotions are associated with very different meanings between scientific disciplines and artistic practices, where they get purposefully evoked, controlled or cast out. So how can we approach the subject of these ephemeral emotions?

The 22nd Hybrid Talks takes a cross-disciplinary look at the concept of “emotion”, this time as part of the satellite program of Berlin’s STATE Festival. There will be guest speakers from the fields of linguistics, software technology, musical composition, media sciences and the performing arts. We’re excited about the various issues, approaches and research results regarding this topic, which is very near to all of our hearts indeed!

The Hybrid Talks aim at promoting mutual inspiration and invite networking. Representatives of different disciplines encounter each other and share their perspectives on the topic “Emotions” through short 10 minute presentations. After the presentations we will continue our exchange across individual disciplines in a relaxed atmosphere.

These are the questions that the following speakers will address (lectures in German language):

“Research on Emotions in the Cinebox”
Prof. Dr. Monika Suckfüll
UdK Berlin | Communication and Media Studies

“Music & Emotions: The Role of Everyday Audio Media”
Dr. Steffen Lepa
TU Berlin | Audio Communication

“‘Words, words, nothing but words’ – About the Inexpressibility of Feelings”
Prof. Dr. Dr. Monika Schwarz-Friesel
TU Berlin | General Linguistics

“Emotional Artificial Intelligence: Automatic Recognition and Interpretation of Emotions in Language”
Prof. Dr. Sebastian Möller, Dr. Tim Polzehl
TU Berlin | Quality and Usability Lab
At the beginning of the Hybrid Talks there will be an award cerrmony with the Hybrid Plattform receiving the prize as an “Landmark in the Land of Ideas”.

by Art & Science Node, Geisbergstr.38, 10777 Berlin

The announcement in 1956 by Francis Crick of “The Central Dogma”, establishing relations between DNA, RNA and proteins marked the onset of the so-called “molecular revolution”. It stirred the imagination not only of scholars but also influenced deeply cultural narratives. Artists brings yet another dimension to this micro world – the dimension of human emotions, posing the question: what kind of tools, scientific and cultural, do we have or must develop to apprehend the invisible? The fundamental bio-molecules, which make life possible, are usually perceived as cellular robots, designed to perform their encoded functions. ASN will present several artistic projects making res invisible visible, in which cellular robots become not only metaphors of life and its evolution, of beauty and truth in nature, but also means of interpersonal communication and embodiment of human pride, creativity, desires as well as fears.
