He received his B.A. in cognitive science at Vassar College, did his doctoral training in cognitive psychology at Yale University, and then did his post-doctoral training in cognitive neuroscience at Stanford University.

He joined the Cognition, Perception and Cognitive Neuroscience area of the Psychology Department at the University of Toronto in 2003 where he holds the Canada Research Chair in Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience.

He has served on the editorial boards of Psychological Science, The Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, Emotion, Cognitive Affective and Behavioral Neuroscience, and is on the founding editorial board of SCAN (Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience), a journal dedicated to the new rapidly growing field of social cognitive neuroscience. He presently serves as Associate editor for the journal Emotion.

In 2009, he was awarded with the APA Early Career Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions in cognitive and behavioral neuroscience. In 2010, he received the Young Investigator Award from the Cognitive Neuroscience Society.
