Thorsten O. Zander leads the research group Team PhyPA at the chair for Biological Psychology and Neuroergonomics at the Technische Universität Berlin, Germany. His research focuses on using neurophysiological signals (with particular emphasis on brain signals) to decode the cognitive or affective state of a user (such as emotion, workload, attention or frustration). By developing novel brain-computer-interfaces (BCIs) and machine learning techniques his group aims to incorporate information on the user’s state to augment and automatically adapt human-computer interaction. He is considered as a pioneer in the field of so called passive BCIs and co-edited a special issue in Frontiers in Neuroscience on “Using neurophysiological signals that reflect cognitive or affective state”. Further, he is affiliated with the Leibnitz Institute Knowledge Research Center and the Excellence Cluster LEAD (Learning, Educational Achievement, and Life Course Development) Graduate School in Tübingen as well as the Swartz Center for Computational Neuroscience at the University of California San Diego.
