Berlin, Friday, November 1, 2019, 6 pm

On 1 November 2019 STATE will open the exhibition "Lichtfelder" (Fields of Light) as part of Berlin Science Week, an artistic-scientific reflection on the subject of light through the works of artists Charlotte Dachroth and Ole Jeschonnek.

The exhibition focuses on works produced by Dachroth and Jeschonnek as part of the Fraunhofer residence program "Artist in Lab - Duality.” For the development of the light sculptures, the two artists worked closely with scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF in Jena. In addition to the works of Dachroth and Jeschonnek, the London-born Berlin-based musician, producer and Dj Perera Elsewhere will perform live at  STATE Studio.

The exhibition, held at the science and art space STATE Studio is part of a multi-part series of events that celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.

Selected artistic works, that reflect current research topics of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft will be presented until February 2020 and invite the public to engage with socially relevant developments in science and research.

Lichtfelder Vernissage

1 November 2019, 6pm

Man has always been fascinated by light - probably the most volatile element of them all. In the 17th century, when its refraction, diffraction and scattering properties were studied and its most important principles and instruments were developed, technological usability also came to the fore.

Famous inventions in geometric optics - such as the telescope - repeatedly triggered ideological revolutions: If man could only imagine the vastness of space before, he was now in direct relation to the stars thanks to lens grinding and incidence of light.

Light as a fuel of scientific knowledge, as an instrument for human appropriation of the world and as an aesthetic material is also the focus of the exhibition "Lichtfelder", presented by STATE and the Fraunhofer Network "Wissenschaft, Kunst and Design", in which works by the Berlin artist duo Charlotte Dachroth and Ole Jeschonnek are shown.

Charlotte Dachroth and Ole Jeschonnek's artistic and research work is characterized by the desire to explore the physical and optical possibilities of light through experimental investigation. Their installations work with a new "aggregation state" of light,  which can be experienced through freely floating minimalist light sculptures.

The exhibition shows both large-format works from earlier years as well as recent light installations created in close collaboration with the scientists of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF) in Jena. The artist duo will take up and work on current technologies driven by the IOF, such as the generation of light fields by micro-optical beamformers on glass wafers.

The two artists live and work in Berlin and studied together at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee. In addition to exhibitions at the Museum für internationale Lichtkunst in Unna as well as in Düsseldorf and Berlin, Dachroth and Jeschonnek were nominated for the Red Dot Award and the German Design Award. The duo's works are the results of many years of artistic and technological research on surfaces, light and their interaction.

In addition to the works of Dachroth and Jeschonnek, the London-born Berlin-based musician, producer and Dj Perera Elsewhere will perform live at STATE Studio. Perera's "mysterious pop music for realistic escapists" (Pitchfork) has already found an enthusiastic audience at the Guggenheim in Venice, Berghain in Berlin and the Mutek Festival in Montreal. Perera will present an instrumental performance accompanied by projected images and melt indigenous sounds, oscillating synthesizers and heavy basses into a distorted carpet of sound. After the opening ceremony, Dick und Fett, veterans of Kreuzberg’s nightlife will bring in sounds and rhythms from all over the world.
