RE:SEARCHING IT SECURITY

RE:SEARCHING IT SECURITY

An Art-Science Residency by CASA in collaboration with STATE

October 2021 - April 2022

Our everyday life is permeated by networked systems. Smart cars, smart homes, smart companies - more and more devices, programs and even people are interwoven into such systems. As a result, the danger of unauthorized access is increasing, and so is the urgency to be protected against these threats from the outside by proper IT security.

However, security technologies are increasingly put to the test by the growing dimensions and sophistication of cyberattacks, resulting in increased complexity in cryptography and security applications. Given this background, how can innovative, digital applications be made safer and at the same time understandable and accessible to the wider society? And how can we make IT security an integral part of everyday connected life?

The Cluster of Excellence CASA Cyber Security in the Age of Large-Scale Adversaries is located at the Horst Görtz Institute for IT Security (HGI) at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB). CASA's research is characterized by an interdisciplinary approach that examines not only technical questions but also the interplay between human behavior and IT security. A total of four Research Hubs are dedicated to diverse and complex topics that deal with the sustainable and secure handling of sensitive data. Since the integration of security solutions is essential for all areas of our globally networked society, the transfer of current insights from science and the integration of research areas into a societal context is more important than ever.

In collaboration with STATE, CASA launches an art-science-residency which goes beyond conventional science communication and promotes public engagement. The program aims to develop a collaboratively designed artwork that provides an aesthetic and reflexive interpretation of IT security and a practice-based, artistic research in the context of science.

Artist-in-Residence

Marco Barotti is the artist-in-residence for RE:SEARCHING IT SECURITY.

He is a Berlin-based media artist who creates data-driven kinetic sound sculptures. The primary focus of his work is to create a tech ecosystem that plays with resemblances to animals and plants. These artworks serve as a metaphor for the anthropogenic impact on the planet and aim to make people aware of environmental issues.

With his artistic project APES, Marco intends to explore IT security and data consumption as well as the benefits and dilemmas that the new digital evolution brings to our society:

We have made great progress in inventing smart systems which are supposed to think of and design a better future. Are we, as a society, ready to act as intelligently as the machines we created? Can the new digital evolution guide us towards a respectful and sustainable cohabitation with our fellow humans, planet and other species?, Marco Barotti
