An artist draws a line. But what does a line actually consist of? What does it consist of in its very own curvature, strength, and direction? According to the theory of quantum fields developed in the last century, our world, our universe - yes, the elementary building blocks of matter per se, as well as their interaction with each other, can be described by fluctuations in the all-embracing quantum fields. These quantum fields elude our everyday experience and the rules of classical physics and yet are the basis of all perceptible matter and energy. They may be described as entanglements of possibilities, as "unborn" energy and matter.

Andreas Jungks work "The Secret Life of Quanta" plays with this almost incomprehensible conceptualization of the perceptible. Created as part of the "unborn" project, "The Secret Life of Quanta" artistically interprets the quantum physical behavior of elementary particles. Seven sheets of Unryu-Japanese paper show lines that never find their beginning and their end on the visible surface of the work, but, like quantum physical phenomena, are not limited to any measurable space. An accompanying video shows an insight into the research of scientists at the IOF in the field of quantum imaging - the arrangement of the work in the form of an octagon is reminiscent of the recordings of elementary particles in a cloud chamber.

"The Secret Life of Quanta" was created in close collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF and in exchange with Marta Gilabert-Basset, researcher in quantum imaging, and Falk Eilenberger, physicist in experimental optics and quantum photonics.

The project is realized in cooperation with Fraunhofer Headquarter Communication and is supported by the Fraunhofer-Network Wissenschaft, Kunst und Design.
