BRAINPALACE ist ein Projekt der Fraunhofer Ausstellungsreihe »Wissenschaft und Kunst im Dialog«
Die fortschreitende Digitalisierung und Beschleunigung all unserer Lebensbereiche birgt die Gefahr einer zunehmenden Individualisierung, Zersplitterung und Verlust von Gemeinsinn. Die eigene Stimme und die unserer Nächsten hallt uns in den Echokammern sozialer Medien wider, politische Radikalisierung und Populismus treiben Menschen auseinander, Affekte steuern Handeln und Fakten verlieren ihre Kraft zu verändern. Empathie, also die Fähigkeit und Bereitschaft sich in die Empfindungen und Einstellungen anderer Menschen einzufühlen, als ein Grundpfeiler funktionierender Gemeinschaften geht zunehmend verloren.
Das künstlerische Forschungsprojekt Brainpalace mit der Künstlerin Tatjana Busch nimmt sich der Frage des Zusammenhalts und des Miteinanders an. In Form von einer Lichtinstallation in Kombination mit Methoden des neuronalen Feedbacks und neurowissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse für die Schaffung kollektiver Gruppenerlebnisse testet Brainpalace die Verstärkung von Empathie durch emotionale Synchronisation. Die Medienkünstler Christian Losert und Daniel Dalfovo sehen eine Herausforderung darin, die komplexen EEG-Signale der Besucher zunächst auf ihre Synchronizitäten zu untersuchen, um anschließend eine Wechselwirkung zwischen Kunstwerk, Raum und Besucher klanglich und visuell zu generieren.

Brainpalace lädt BesucherInnen ein, in Interaktion mit der Lichtskultpur zu treten. Die eigens für das Projekt geschaffene Installation von Tatjana Busch wird in Form eines Prototypen ausgestellt und erste Interaktionsmöglichkeiten können erprobt und getestet werden. Aus diesen Besucherinteraktionen ergeben sich Forschungsfragen, die in der zweiten Projektphase von WissenschaftlerInnen der Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft aufgegriffen werden. In der zweiten Ausstellungsphase des Projekts werden BesucherInnen eingeladen anhand von Gehirnströmen das Erscheinungsbild der Installation aktiv zu steuern.

Hintergrund
Das Projekt ist eine Zusammenarbeit der Münchner Installationskünstlerin Tatjana Busch, Christian Losert und Daniel Dalfovo, des Fraunhofer-Instituts für Arbeitswirtschaft und Organisation IAO und des Fraunhofer-Instituts für Techno- und Wirtschaftsmathematik ITWM sowie des Berliner Ausstellungslabors STATE Studio im Rahmen der Ausstellungsreihe »Wissenschaft und Kunst im Dialog« der Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.

What new impulses can be conceived in the interplay of art and science to promote empathy and social cohesion?
BRAINPALACE is a project of the Fraunhofer exhibition series "Science and Art in Dialogue"
The ongoing digitalisation and acceleration of all areas of our lives comes with the danger of increased fragmentation, individualisation and loss of communality. Our own voice and beliefs are being amplified in the echo chambers of social media, political radicalisation and populism drive people apart, affects control actions and facts lose their meaning. Empathy, i.e. the ability and willingness to imagine and share the feelings and attitudes of other people, is increasingly lost as a cornerstone of functioning communities.
The artistic research project with artist Tatjana Busch addresses the question of social cohesion and togetherness and asks: “How might we nurture empathy and togetherness through artistic neuroscientific interventions?”. The light installation in combination with methods of neuronal feedback and neuroscientific findings for the creation of collective experiences tests the strengthening of empathy through emotional synchronization. To bring this installation to life, media artists Christian Losert and Daniel Dalfovo see one of the challenges in first examining the complex EEG signals of the visitors for their synchronicity. From there an interaction between artwork, space and visitors both sonically and visually can be generated.

The installation by Tatjana Busch, created especially for the project, will be exhibited in the form of a prototype and provide first opportunities for interaction. The visitor interactions will result in research questions that will be taken up by scientists of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in the second project phase. In a second exhibition phase, visitors are invited to actively control the appearance of the installation using brain waves.
