An artistic approach to neurofeedback for empathy creation
The artistic research project BRAINPALACE wants to find out exactly that and has been exploring the potential that lies in the combination of art and neurofeedback since the beginning of the year 2020. The goal is to develop a light and sound installation in the exhibition laboratory of STATE Studio, which should make it possible to experience the common sensation in a group.
In the first phase of the project, media artists Christian Losert and Daniel Dalfovo (Atelier E) measured the interaction of visitors with a prototype of the installation at the beginning of 2020. For this purpose, their EEG signals were examined for synchronicities and the interaction between artwork, space and participants was generated sonically and visually.

The installation was conceived by the Munich artist Tatjana Busch, whose work is dedicated to the aesthetic perception of compassion and togetherness. In the sense of an audiovisual dramaturgy, the installation makes light, sound, color, form and movement perceptible through neurofeedback within a group.
In the second exhibition phase, visitors are now invited to interact mentally with the art object in a new experimental arrangement and to actively control the appearance of the installation with their brain waves. Is it possible to create a collective group experience whilst strengthening empathy through emotional synchronisation?
In the follow-up project BRAINPATTERNS, the measured neuronal signatures will be explored in brain patterns. In this context, the Fraunhofer Institutes ITWM and IAO are testing whether software tools such as signal analytic procedures and machine learning methods can be used to find initial indications for the recognition of different levels of consciousness - based on the identification of recurring patterns in the visualizations.

Background
The project “BRAINPALACE - BRAINPATTERNS Power and Patterns of Thought” is part of the exhibition series “Art meets Science” and the network “Science, Art and Design” of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. It is realized together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO and the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM and is a collaboration between the artists Tatjana Busch, Christian Losert and Daniel Dalfovo (Atelier E), the researchers Mathias Vukelić, Ravi Kanth Kosuru, Hans Trinkaus, Alex Sarishvili, Laura Kaltwasser, Dorothée Höfter and STATE Studio.

Das Schaffen von Empathie durch Neurofeedback. Eine künstlerische Intervention

Das künstlerische Forschungsprojekt BRAINPALACE möchte genau das herausfinden und erforscht seit Mai 2020, welches Potential in der Verbindung von Kunst und Neurofeedback steckt. Ziel ist es, eine Licht- und Klanginstallation im Ausstellungslabor STATE Studio zu entwickeln, die das gemeinsame Empfinden in einer Gruppe erlebbar machen soll.
Die Medienkünstler Christian Losert und Daniel Dalfovo (Atelier E) haben in der ersten Phase des Projekts anfang des Jahres 2020 die Interaktion der Besucher*innen mit einem Prototyp der Installation gemessen. Dafür wurden deren EEG-Signale auf Synchronizitäten untersucht und die Wechselwirkung zwischen Kunstwerk, Raum und Teilnehmer*innen klanglich und visuell generiert.
Die Installation wurde von der Münchner Künstlerin Tatjana Busch konzipiert, die sich der ästhetischen Wahrnehmung von Mitgefühl und Miteinander widmet. Im Sinne einer audiovisuellen Dramaturgie macht die Installation Licht, Sound, Farbe, Form und Bewegung durch das Neurofeedback innerhalb einer Gruppe erlebbar.
In der zweiten Ausstellungsphase werden die Besucher*innen nun eingeladen, in einer neuen Versuchsanordnung mit dem Kunstobjekt mental zu interagieren und mit ihren Gehirnströmen das Erscheinungsbild der Installation aktiv zu steuern. Können dabei kollektive Gruppenerlebnisse geschaffen und Empathie durch emotionale Synchronisation verstärkt werden?
Im Folgeprojekt BRAINPATTERNS sollen die gemessenen neuronalen Signaturen in Hirnmustern exploriert werden. Dabei erproben die Fraunhofer-Institute ITWM und IAO, ob mittels Softwarewerkzeugen wie signalanalytische Verfahren und Methoden des maschinellen Lernens erste Hinweise zur Erkennung unterschiedlicher Bewusstseinsebenen auffindbar sind – anhand von Identifikation wiederkehrender Muster in den Visualisierungen.

Das Projekt »BRAINPALACE – BRAINPATTERNS Macht und Muster der Gedanken« wird in der Ausstellungsreihe »Wissenschaft und Kunst im Dialog« und dem »Netzwerk Wissenschaft, Kunst und Design« der Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft realisiert.
