In October 2017, as part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of sister cities Berlin and Los Angeles, STATE Festival brought Berlin's Open Science scene to LA and sets up camp in a downtown arts gallery for its temporary Studio space. On the menu: a month-long series of events such as art installations, panels, workshops, a hackathon, interactive demonstrations and performances.

As part of the two day festival Berlin Lab on Oct 4&5, 2017, in downtown Los Angeles, organized by Berlin Partner, STATE Festival brought to Los Angeles a representation of Berlin's thriving open science and creative scene with three individual programs.

Keep that dream burning is an eight-minute experimental short film, based entirely on algorithmic compositions, who invites its viewers on a journey of fine black-and-white particles fluttering across the screen.
Spontaneously interact with an AI to visually reflect your thoughts and feelings. Mycroft will question you about a variety of topics. No matter if your responses are coherent, random or non-linear, Mycroft will leave you with something to contemplate.
Described by Artsy as "the biggest artistic achievement in 2017," STATE is proud to host the first selection of images created by the acclaimed AICAN algorithm and produced in the Art and Artificial Intelligence Lab at Rutgers University.
Portraying example initiatives in the creative capitals Berlin and Los Angeles, the panel discussion „Frei:Räume“ discusses the role which protected niches and free spaces in the city take as catalysts for fostering new cultural and societal models.
The Curious Minds Networking Station invites attendees to exercise their curiosity and creativity around cutting edge-scientific topics in a safe, encouraging and stimulating environment.
