From June 2021, as part of the European Commission’s S+T+ARTS initiative, 12 new Regional S+T+ARTS Centers will
create a space for artists, scientists, and technologists to work together on a common mission: Repairing the present.

Hypertopia bridges today and tomorrow. The transdisciplinary program and exhibition anticipates a post-crisis future to investigate approaches for a meaningful present. With a selection of artistic positions, propositions and exploratory projects that incorporate scientific methods as well as speculative modes of thought, Hypertopia challenges hierarchies, probes ideas, and imagines new scenarios of cooperative, interspecies coexistence.

Hypertopia versteht sich als Ort zwischen heute und morgen. Angetrieben von der Vision eines kollektiven Bewusstseinswandels antizipiert das transdisziplinäre Ausstellungs- und Themenprogramm eine Zeit nach der Krise, um Denk- und Gestaltungsansätze für eine zukunftsfähige Gegenwart zu entwickeln. Anhand künstlerischer Positionen, Propositionen und explorativer Projekte, die spekulative mit wissenschaftlichen Methoden verbinden, werden Hierarchien hinterfragt, Ideen erprobt und alternative Szenarien eines kooperativen, biodiversen Miteinanders entworfen.

Raspberry flavour from bacteria, car tyres from dandelion or ladybird antibiotics: All this and more is part of the vast field of the bio-economy. The exhibition MACHT NATURE presents results from nine workshops that were realized in 2019 as part of the three-year research project "Farming the Uncanny Valley". Especially for these workshops, locations in rural and urban areas were selected and staged to reveal contradictions between our understanding and dealing with nature.

Himbeeraroma aus Bakterien, Autoreifen aus Löwenzahn oder Marienkäfer-Antibiotika: Das alles und noch viel mehr umfasst das weite Feld der Bioökonomie. Die Ausstellung MACHT NATUR präsentiert Ergebnisse aus neun Workshops, die 2019 im Rahmen des dreijährigen Forschungsprojekts „Farming the Uncanny Valley“ realisiert wurden. Eigens für diese Workshops wurden Orte im ländlichen und städtischen Raum ausgewählt und inszeniert, um Widersprüche zwischen unserem Verständnis und dem Umgang mit Natur aufzudecken.

Seit ihrer Einführung im Jahr 2015 hat die Initiative der Europäischen Kommission „S+T+ARTS – Innovation at the nexus of Science, Technology, and the ARTS” die Integration künstlerischer Verfahren und fortgeschrittener Forschung und Innovation vorangetrieben. DIe Ausstellung NEAR + FUTURES + QUASI + WORLDS hat sich zum Ziel gemacht, die entscheidende Rolle, die die Zusammenarbeit in wissenschaftlichen, technologischen und künstlerischen Bereichen bei der Förderung zeitgenössischer Forschung und integrativer Formen modernster künstlerischer Schöpfung zu spielen vermag, in den Vordergrund zu rücken.

Das künstlerische Forschungsprojekt BRAINPALACE der Münchner Lichtkünstlerin Tatjana Busch in Zusammenarbeit mit Wissenschaftlern der Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, den Medienkünstlern Christian Losert und Daniel Dalfovo und STATE Studio nimmt sich dieser Frage an.

How can art and science promote empathy and social cohesion in times of crisis? The artistic research project BRAINPALACE by Munich-based light artist Tatjana Busch in collaboration with scientists from the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, media artists Christian Losert and Daniel Dalfovo and the Berlin-based exhibition laboratory STATE Studio addresses this question.

Winner of the Italian Council project (2019), Christian Fogarolli’s exhibition Pneuma focuses on the immateriality and intangibility of mental illness by analyzing various geographical and cultural contexts, questioning the stigma and categorization created by political, corporate and state systems. Das Ausstellungs- und Forschungsprojekt PNEUMA behandelt die Immaterialität psychischer Erkrankungen, indem verschiedene geographische und kulturelle Kontexte analysiert sowie das Stigma und die Kategorisierung, die durch politische, unternehmerische und staatliche Systeme geschaffen werden, in Frage gestellt werden. Fogarollis Arbeit ist ein Versuch, das gesamte Spektrum der Subjektivität hinter Diagnosen sichtbar zu machen.

In Kooperation mit dem Fraunhofer-Institut für Bauphysik IBP entwickelt der Experimentalphilosoph Jonathon Keats derzeit ein revolutionäres Stadtplanungsschema, das die Konsequenzen des Klimawandels städtebaulich neu denkt. Ab dem 12. Dezember präsentiert das STATE Studio Berlin mit der „Primordiale Cities Initiative” vorläufige Stadtentwürfe.

In the second exhibition of Field Experiments, STATE Studio presents the artistic research project Living Canvas composed of the installation Living Canvas and the workshop Algature by artist and designer Fara Peluso.

In der zweiten Ausstellung von Field Experiments und im Rahmen von transmediale Vorspiel präsentiert STATE Studio das künstlerische Forschungsprojekt Living Canvas der Künstlerin und Designerin Fara Peluso, bestehend aus der Installation Living Canvas und dem Workshop Algature.

Die finnische Künstlerin und Designerin Emilia Tikka hat drei Monate in Laboren am Max-Delbrück-Centrum verbracht. Während dieser Zeit hat sie sich mit der laufenden CRISPR-Forschung beschäftigt und recherchiert, ob es zukünftig möglich sein könnte, durch genetische Reprogrammierung die „Verjüngung“ menschlicher Zellen herbeizuführen. Die Ergebnisse ihrer künstlerischen Residency sind Gegenstand einer Ausstellung im STATE Studio Berlin.

The artist Emilia Tikka spent three months at MDC labs. She was curious about CRISPR and whether genetic reprogramming could enable a “rejuvenation” of human cells in the future. Now, the results of her residency called “AEON – Trajectories of Longevity and CRISPR” are being shown at STATE Studio Berlin.
